Minnesota unter who slipped from deer stand shares safety warning

From his hospital room at HCMC, deer hunter Phil Martinson, 58, of Cokato, recounts falling from a tree while setting up his tree stand for the deer hunting season last Friday, Oct. 22. Martinson suffered a broken L1 vertebrae in the fall and had surgery on Oct. 29. Martinson wants other hunters to realize the risks in hunting from a tree stand. In the future he said he will do three things differently when hunting. He will now hunt from a tree stand equipped with a ladder. He'll also not hunt alone from a tree stand but will have a hunting buddy somewhere near. Lastly, when in a stand he will always wear a safety harness and tree belt. Martinson was seen at HCMC Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, in Minneapolis. (David Joles/Minneapolis Star Tribune/TNS)
